To get rid of private tuition and coaching cultures, leading educationists suggested necessary initiatives and enhancement of sharp vigilance to make class teaching effective in educational institutions in order to ensure quality education, reports BSS. As entire education sector is reeling from private tuition and coaching culture, it is urgent to stop these practices with strict enforcement of the existing laws and enhancing salaries and facilities of teachers, they made the comments while talking to this news agency.
Director General of Directorate of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Prof Fahima Khatun said imbalance between teachers and students ratio is one of the major reasons for poor class teaching and the situation is even worse in leading educational institutions in Dhaka city. “There is one teacher for 60 to70 students... this teacher and student ratio has been seen in almost all educational institutions in the country,” she said adding, this poor ratio between teacher and students is hampering learning process of students. In developed countries, teacher and student ratio is one teacher for 30 students, Prof Fahima added. Blaming inefficiency of teachers for poor class performance, Prof Fahima said, “We need meritorious teachers to make class teaching effective and interesting, which will reduce private tuition-dependent education”
The government is facing difficulties to shut down coaching centers and stop private tuition, she said adding coaching centres should be closed alongside stopping private tuition to improve standard of education. Assistant Headmaster of Ideal School and College Md A Salam Khan said result-oriented mindset of guardians, unprofessional attitude of a section of teachers to earn more money and lack of proper monitoring of authorities lead to the practices of private tuition and coaching. Most guardians only want good result meaning they are ignoring real learning process of their children, he said adding, “This attitude of guardians should be changed... They should give their attention to develop intellectual capabilities of their children to build a knowledge-based society.”
Salam Khan said some teachers do not bother for their class teaching as they engage themselves in coaching teaching and private tuition to earn more money encouraging other teachers to follow them to achieve more economic gains.
