After providing 196 garbage dump tracks to the municipalities, now the government is going to provide 30 road rollers to the metropolis for repairing dilapidated roads at their respective areas with own funds. For providing the road rollers, the LGRD ministry will purchase the roller-compactors from the local contractors under Direct Procurement Method (DPM), the sources in the LGRD ministry said.
Already the ministry has prepared a proposal in this regard and it would be sent to the Cabinet Division seeking approval of the cabinet committee on economic affairs soon, the sources added. Secretary of LGRD division Helauddin Ahmed, in the proposal, said that the road infrastructures in various municipality areas are worst affected by heavy rainfall, flood and cyclones in last one year. And accordingly, the roads have to be repaired as per the decision of the division, the proposal added.
“There are no required equipments to the municipalities to repair the roads. And thus, on priority basis, road rollers should be purchased for the metropolis,” the proposal said. The LGRD division has allocated Tk 50 crore for purchasing 30 road rollers for the fiscal year 2019-20, the proposal reads.
Talking to The Independent, a high official of LGRD division said that there are a total of 329 municipalities in the country and activities of most of the metropolises were not conducting due to fund shortage. “We are providing facilities to the municipalities on priority basis through allocating little funds,” he said. Road roller (sometimes called a roller-compactor) is a compactor-type engineering vehicle used to compact soil, gravel, concrete, or asphalt in the construction of roads and foundations.
