Basic facilities in 90 days: Taposh

With the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) election scheduled for January 30, Awami League (AL) mayoral aspirant barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh yesterday said that he would ensure timely delivery of services related to the people’s fundamental rights. “If elected, I would ensure fundamental rights related facilities for the people within 90 days of taking power,” Taposh told reporters after coming out of a programme at the Supreme Court Bar Auditorium.

Supreme Court lawyer Dr Bashir Ahmed had organised the programme to mark the 82th birthday of senior advocate Abdul Baset Majumder. Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain was also present. “I have noticed that there are not sufficient playing fields in all the wards of DSCC. So, young people are being deprived of taking part in sports. We have to make playgrounds at all wards of DSCC, which is a lengthy process,” Taposh, who is also the MP of the Dhaka-10 constituency, said. The mayoral aspirant further said that he would make a 30-year master plan so that there is an environment-friendly playground in every ward.

“After drawing up a mega plan to build a new Dhaka, I will work to develop and improve the capital city for the greater interest of the country,” he said. Asked about the fielding of new candidates for the DSCC mayor’s post by both AL and BNP this time, Taposh clarified that he may be a new candidate for the civic body polls, but he has been working in the Dhaka-10 constituency for a long time. “I have worked for development in the Dhaka-10 constituency despite many hindrances. I will be able to gift a new city to the people if I get elected in the polls,” he claimed.

According to the returning officer for the DSCC polls, eight mayoral hopefuls, 1,347 general councillor aspirants for 75 posts and 190 woman councillor hopefuls for 25 posts have collected nomination forms.

Among others, AL nominee Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, BNP candidate Ishraque Hossain, Jatiya Party candidate Mohammad Saifuddin, and Islami Andolan Bangladesh nominee Abdur Rahman have collected nomination forms for the post of the DSCC mayor.

On December 22, the Election Commission (EC) had announced that the polls for DSCC and Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) would be held on January 30. During a press briefing at the EC office, chief election commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda said electronic voting machines (EVMs) will be used in the polls instead of the traditional ballot boxes.

According to the EC, the two city corporations have over 54.02 lakh voters—30.35 lakh in DNCC and 23.67 lakh in DSCC. Along with electing the mayor, DNCC voters will also elect 54 ward councillors and 18 reserved women councillors.
