Khulna Jamaat-Shibir men go into hiding fearing arrest

Most of the senior or junior leaders of Khulna unit of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student association Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) went into hiding fearing mass arrest, leaving organisational activities almost inoperative. As a result, there was no significant presence of the Jamaat-Shibir leaders in its recent activities including the 20-party alliance or even Jamaat called different protest programmes in the city and district. The intelligence agencies and police administration, remaining on high alert, are also aware of the possible subversion of Jamaat-Shibir. Besides, police have been conducting combing operation in different areas in a bid to nab the absconding Jamaat-Shibir leaders and foil their plan.
A high-official of Khulna police administration, preferring anonymity told The Independent that following the arrest of some leaders, most of the leaders of Jamaat-Shibir had gone into hiding and been leading the party men from behind the scene.
 “We’re conducting combing operation in different areas of Khulna and the country to nab the Jamaat-Shibir leaders who have been accused in different cases on charge of destructive activities before or after Parliamentary election held on January 5 and on charge of destructive activities during previous hartal” he said. Police have already managed to nab some of the senior leaders of Khulna Jamaat-e-Islami, he added.
On November 10 Paikgachha thana police arrested two Jamaat-Shibir men from of Raruli union under Paikgachha upazila in connection with different criminal cases filed against them. The arrestees were identified as Esem Golder (55), son of late Munsi Delowar Hossain of Shrikanthapur village and Shibir leader Saddam Hossain (24), son of Hanef Ali of Baka Bhabanipur, said Officer-in-Charge of Paikgachha thana Md Ashraf Hossain. They were wanted on charge of destructive activities during previous hartal and were sent to jail through court.
Detective Branch Sub-Inspector of Satkhira district police Md Enamul Haque said that police arrested 33 BNP-Jamaat-Shibir activists during a drive on Tuesday under Satkhira district over destructive activities. Of the arrestees, 33 out of 28 were Jamaat-Shibir leaders and activists; he said adding that they were sent to jail.
On November 10 (Tuesday) Kochua thana police under Bagerhat district arrested two Jamaat activists on charge different cases before national general election. Officer-in-Charge of Kochua thana said the arrestees were identified as Abdul Haque Sheikh (42), son of late Abdul Gani Sheikh and Mizanur Rahman (42), son of late  Harunur Rashid at Mothertala village of  Gajalia union under the upazila. OC said they were fugitive of criminal case no 11, date 28/07/2015 filed against them and they were sent to jail.
Meanwhile, coordinator of BNP-led 20-party alliance Khulna district unit, also former lawmaker of Khulna Sadar constituency Nazrul Islam Manju said, “We observed that the law enforcers, in a sudden drive, have arrested a large number of BNP-Jamaat leaders and activists to root out them from politics. The government cannot tolerate any dissenting opinion in the country. As a result, the country now has a political vacuum as the government has been destroying its democracy.”   Sources close to the KMP and Khulna district police said almost all the leaders of Khulna unit of Jamaat-e-Islami are accused of different cases filed with different police stations before or after parliamentary election held on January 5 anarchy in Khulna. As a result, the accused Jamaat leaders went into hiding in a bid to avoid police arrest.
