Speakers at a discussion meeting in the city yesterday expressed deep concern over the fact that at least half the people suffering from diabetes in the country are ignorant of the disease. They observed that awareness will have to be created to prevent the disease so that a catastrophe is not to be faced in the near future. Quitting the habit of smoking, maintaining an ideal body weight, less-intake of fat and taking regular exercise can help people prevent diabetes, they noted.
Unless the disease is prevented, the patients might get their organs like kidneys, eyes, heart and legs seriously damaged, the speakers observed. Their other recommendations include creating public awareness about the devastating effects of fast food and soft drinks, making it obligatory for all schools and colleges to have a playground and awareness programme using mass media and mobile operators.  They also stressed that people should practise good habits and avoid bad ones to avert diabetes.
The speakers made the comments at a discussion meeting held at Bangladesh Diabetes Association (BDA) Khulna auditorium under Sadar police station in the city. Khulna district unit of BDA observed the World Diabetes Day-2015 in a befitting manner.  The day has been being observed since 2007 after United Nations in 2006 decided to observe the day as Diabetes Day on November 14, the birth day of Insulin inventor Frederick Grant Banting. BDA Khulna unit president Quazi Wahiduzzaman presided over the discussion meeting.
Lawmaker of Khulna Sadar constituency Mizanur Rahman Mizan, Khulna Divisional Commissioner Md Abdus Samad, Mayor (acting) of Khulna City Corporation (KCC) Anisur Rahman Biswas addressed the discussion as special  guests.
Among others, Senior Medical Officer Dr Abdus Sabur, acting general secretary of the organisation Mozammel Haque, and former vice-president Siddiqur Rahman, spoke on the occasion. Earlier, to mark the day, Khulna unit of BDA brought out a colourful procession that paraded the main roads of the city. The procession was participated by a good number of government and non-government officials, NGO personalities, civil society members, students, teachers and elites of the city with placards to create awareness among the people about the preventable disease.
