Riverbank erosion and seasonal floods displace about 4 lakh people across the country each year, says a new report. The report, ‘Community Resilience and Disaster Related Displacement in South Asia’, conducted by the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), reveals that about 4 million people have been displaced by sudden disasters in the country during 2008 to 2013, reports UNB. ActionAid Bangladesh and the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) jointly released the research report at a city hotel yesterday. The report says: “To mitigate the sufferings of the displaced people, Bangladesh needs to prepare communities for sudden disasters and reduce risk of displacement through awareness rising and adaptation schemes.”
Speaking on the occasion, climate expert Dr Atiqe Rahman said climate change is intensifying the number of displaced people. Director of International Centre for Climate Change and Development Dr Saleemul Huq said migration or displacement is a global issue.
