Today marks the first death anniversary of legendary filmmaker Mrinal Sen. To recall the film maestro, Moviyana Film Society has arranged a commemorative discussion today at 5:30pm on the premises of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) in Segun Bagicha of the capital.
Eminent filmmaker Haider Rizvi, cine-journalist Hashem Sufi and president of Moviyana Film Society Belayet Hossain Mamun will attend the discussion on the life and films of Mrinal Sen.
Born on May 14, 1923 in Faridpur, now in Bangladesh, Mrinal Sen was known for his pronouncedly pro-Left ideology. His trilogy- ‘Interview’, ‘Calcutta 71’ and ‘Padatik’- is considered to be a masterpiece for depicting the social and political upheaval in the Kolkata of the ‘70s.
Along with his contemporaries Satyajit Ray and Ritwik Ghatak, he pioneered the ‘New Wave’ cinema in India.
Mrinal Sen, a Dadasaheb Phalke award-winning film director, died on December 30 in 2018 after a prolonged battle with age-related ailments at 95.
