A modern cricket academy to be built at ZACS in Ctg

MD ABU TALHA SARKER back from Ctg

A cricket academy with modern amenities will be built at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium (ZACS) in Chattogram. The place for the academy has already been chosen. The Chattogram Development Authority (CDA) will build the academy.

The place has been fixed on the basis of consultations between the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and Chattogram City Corporation (CCC).

The design of the academy has been approved by the CCC mayor, AZM Nasir, who is also a director of the BCB, in a recently held meeting.

“As per the design, the academy will be built on the northern flank of the stadium, beside the pond area. The CDA will build it with their own funds,” said AZM Nasir.

“Once it is built, around 40 players can be accommodated at the academy. Along with that, there will also be arrangements and facilities for the backroom coaching staff,” Nasir told The Independent.

The BCB had planned to build a cricket academy like Mirpur's National Cricket Academy in every division to implement the concept of their regional cricket, which has begun in the Sylhet Division.

The board is building a cricket academy in Sylhet beside the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium. The work of the academy is going on in full swing. It is expected to be opened next year.

The board had plans to create such an academy in Chattogram at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium after Sylhet as a part of its regional cricket programme. The work is progressing accordingly.

In the meantime, the CDA is doing the work as a part of compensation. The CDA needed to open an alternative route enabling people to easily come out of Chattogram city and be connected to the newly developed highway on the western side of the stadium.

For this, they had conducted several feasibility studies, but finally it was decided that the construction of a flyover in Sagorika would be the best alternative.

Mayor Nasir said they would soon float the tender for the academy at Sagorika, seeking bids from national and multi-national companies.

It is learnt that the CDA held several rounds of discussions with the CCC and BCB officials on the matter and finally convinced the stakeholders to create an easy access to the place.

Already, the indoor of the ZACS has been demolished and the work on a new indoor has started. Besides the two pitches, four will be built in the new indoor having air-conditioning facilities.

For building a fly-over above the indoor, the main gate of the ZACS will be shifted towards the northern side.

As a part of the plan to open a new route, the indoor of the ZACS has already been demolished. The CDA will build a new indoor with modern facilities with their own funds.

The building work of the new indoor has already started next to Gate No 2 of the stadium. It is supposed to be ready in the next three months.

BCB executive in Chattogram Saiful Alam Babu said, like the Mirpur National Cricket Academy, (NCA), they will build a Cricket Academy here.

Babu also said the CDA authority would build the new academy on the northern side of the stadium at Sagorika.

“The design of the academy has been approved by the CCC mayor AZM Nasir in a recent meeting,” said Saiful Alam Babu.

“If the academy is built, at least 40 players will be accommodated there. There will be no problem for the players. They will be able to practice round the year, while staying in the dormitory of the stadium,” Babu told The Independent.

“There will also be facilities for coaches in the dormitory,” he added.
