How to increase employee efficiency at your workplace

Employees are major assets of any organisation. As a result, equipping these assets through effective training becomes imperative in order to maximise their job performance. Positioning them to take on the challenges of the today’s competitive business climate requires a needs- based training system.

The 1994 study by Anderson (1994) recommends a proactive approach to training needs where “training should be considered as a proactive process that anticipates future needs and change, and which prepares people to meet them”. Anderson suggests such approach motivate using “Training Needs Analysis”(TNA) for achieving efficiency in the future. TNA shifts from looking for the cause of the problem to assisting people in their work helping them achieve greater efficiency and satisfaction.

Training leads to skill enhancement, which in turn, leads to increased efficiency, which ultimately can take productivity to the next level. The authorities should provide their employees with the exact knowledge they need, when they need it. This will benefit the employers in the long run.

“The Mcghee and Thayer’s three step model” is a practical guide to analyse TNA at three levels. On an organisational level, analysis involves looking at the internal environment of the organisation to influences that could affect employee performance, it determines its fit with organisational goals and objectives, it also identifies constraints on training. Secondly, operational analysis examines specific jobs to determine the requirements necessaryto get the job done i.e., expected job performance. The most relevant analysis is the Individual (Person) analysis examines those who occupy the jobs to see whether they possess the required KSAs necessary to do the job.

I believe raising the efficiency of workers requires a considered and committed approach to professional development needs. Training Needs Analysis as a method of employees’ development is the ideal approach for preparing employees with certain skills or giving them the ability to fill the gaps in their efficiency. To bring long-term benefits to a business, training should be seen as continually renewed ongoing process with defined, monitored, refreshed and enhanced objectives.
