At least 22 people were injured in a clash between two groups of local Awami League leaders and activists over establishing supremacy at Kalia Bazar in Bagerhat Sadar upazila yesterday noon, reports UNB from Bagerhat.
Locals said Sheikh Omar Faruk, publicity secretary of Dema union unit of ruling Awami Leage, had long been at loggerheads with another ruling party activist Nuru Mollah over establishing dominance in the area.
A few days back, supporters of Faruk hang a banner in front of the union parishad office, greeting the local UP chairman.
Yesterday noon, supporters of Nuru Mollah tore off the banner which angered Faruk’s men. Following the incident, supporters of the two groups rushed to the spot with sticks, brick chips and sharp weapons and engaged in a clash.
Later, they fought a pitched battle which left at least 22 people, including women, injured, said OC M Mizanur Rahman of Bagerhat Model Police Station.
