Candidates busy contacting voters

Pourasabha polls
OUR CORRESPONDENT, Jamalpur

Probable candidates in the forthcoming municipal polls have started communicating with people in the district.
The candidates also set up billboards and posters in various strategic points to familiarise themselves with the voters. District election office sources said according to the rule, the election to municipality has to be completed within 90 days before the end of tenure. According to the election office, the current tenure of Jamalpur municipality will expire on February 26, 2016 next. Besides, the present term of Melandah municipality will end on February 21,2016, Sarishabari municipality on February 16, 2016, Islampur municipality on February 28, 2016, Madarganj municipality on March 2, 2016 and Dewanganj municipality on February 7, 2016.
As the election is drawing near the aspirants are moving door to door to seek ‘blessings’ from the voters. Billboards highlighting the candidates have been put up in front of educational institutes, railway station, bus stands, markets and road intersections.
Local leaders are also contacting party leaders to get nomination as this year election will be held under party's symbols. Besides, the aspirants from the ruling Awami League and BNP are holding meetings to drum up support for them.
AL has also formed committees to conduct the Jamalpur municipality election, which the party posted two previous consecutive win.
In Jamalpur municipality mayoral post, two candidates -- one from BNP and another from AL – are being openly discussed this year. Incumbent mayor Advocate Shah Md Wares Ali Mamun is still a lone candidate from BNP. Mayor Mamun, who is also secretary of district BNP, said he is prepared to contest in the next municipality election.
On the other hand, after a two consecutive defeat in Jamalpur municipal polls the AL has changed its candidate. This year, Mirza Shakhawatul Alam Mony, former vice-president of district AL, who was elected upazila chairman twice, is the probable candidate.
