51 arrested in two dists

At least 51 people, including BNP–Jamaat activists, were taken into custody from various areas early yesterday over suspicion of subversive activities.
In Thakurgaon, police during drives arrested at least 20 BNP-Jamaat men from different spots in the district early yesterday. The arrestees include convener of Union Jubo Dal Israfil Azad and Jamaat leader Ziru Mohammad. The identities of other arrested persons could not be known. Superintendent of Police Farhad Ahmed said they have been arrested on charges of planning subversive activities in the area.
 In Jhenidah, police in several drives in six upazilas of Jhenidah arrested 31 people, including two Jamaat Islami activists, early yesterday. Among them, 29 were arrested in various cases and Jamaat activists detained over suspicion of subversive activities. Sources at the Jhenidah superintendent of police said of the arrested, 11 are from sadar upazila, 2 from Kotchandpur, 11 from Shailkupa, 2 from Harinakundo, 1 from Kaliganj and 5 from Moheshpur upazila.
The two Jamaat activists have been identified as Zahangir Hossain, 50, of Bishoikhali village in sadar upazila and Abdul Aziz, 55, of Mamunshia village in Kotchandpur upazila.
Azbahar Ali Sheikh, additional police superintendent of Jhenidah, said the police conducted several drives in different area of the district and arrested them. Later, they were sent to jail, said the ASP.
