Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given time to BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia for a meeting during his two-day visit to Bangladesh beginning tomorrow (Saturday), it is learnt.
The meeting is likely to take place between 4:00pm and 5:00pm on Sunday at Hotel Sonargaon, where Modi will stay, according to sources. The meeting is not part of Modi’s official itinerary. BNP leaders expect that the meeting between the Indian Premier and former Bangladesh Prime Minister will certainly take place, and Modi would express his views on transition to democracy.
Addressing a discussion organised by the Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal, BNP standing committee member, Lt Gen (Retd) Mahbubur Rahman, said yesterday (Thursday) that the schedule of Modi’s meeting with Khaleda Zia has been kept secret.
“The country’s people do not expect that Narendra Modi will refuse to meet Khaleda Zia, who reflects the hopes and aspirations of 16 crore people,” he said. He said people want that Modi would talk about transition to democracy in the country.
The BNP policymaker also hoped that the outstanding issues, including land boundary agreement, Teesta water sharing and enclave problems, would be resolved during the visit of the Indian Premier.
Talking to The Independent Mahbubur Rahman said they are hopeful about the meeting between Modi and Khaleda Zia. He, however, said that officially he does not know when and where the meeting will take place.
