Over 200 illegal structures demolished in Rajshahi

Over two hundred illegal structures were demolished in a special eviction drive beside Rajshahi-Naogaon Highway from city’s Amm Chhatar area to Hazrat Shah Makhdum (R) Airport yesterday. Roads and Highways Department had taken the massive eviction drive for constructing four-lane highway in the district, officials said.

However, during the drive, people claimed that they were evicted without any notice. A team of RHD, led by Mahabubur Rahman Faruki, deputy secretary of the directorate of RHD, comprised with the executive magistrate of the district administration, police, fire fighters and concerned service departments conducted the massive eviction drive in the morning.

Over two hundred illegal structures, including illegal shops, houses, installations and signboards removed from both sides of Rajshahi-Naogaon highway. “Government has determined to construct four-lane highway, so illegal structures beside the highway are evicted for the sake of government’s development work”, Mahabubur Rahman Faruki, estate and law officer of RHD directorate, said.

Meanwhile, the evicted people claimed that they were evicted without any notice so they were facing huge loss. Manager of Kismat petrol pump of Amm Chhatar area claimed that they lease the land on a temporary basis from the government and set-up the pump, however even after showing the papers; they are not interest to listening any reason.   

Jamal Uddin, a shop owner, was trying to save some materials from his evicted shop when the correspondent visited his shop after the eviction drive. Talking to the journalists, Mahabubur, however, claimed that they were demolishing the illegal structures, so, they did not need to serve any notice to anybody. “We have declared about the eviction drive against illegal establishment a month ago”, he added.
