The year’s lowest temperature—5.7 degree Celsius—was recorded at the border upazila of Tetulia, in Panchagarh district, yesterday. AKM Nazmul Haque, meteorologist stationed at the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) headquarters in Dhaka, told The Independent that the temperature of 5.7 degree Celsius was recorded in the morning, which eventually climbed to 6.5 degree Celsius during noon in Tetulia upazila. Haque informed that the country’s highest temperature — 26.2° Celsius — was recorded in Cox’s Bazaar yesterday.
Meanwhile, a mild cold wave is sweeping across the whole country, disrupting normal life and causing suffering to people mostly in the north-western districts.
The cold wave, sweeping over the whole of Rangpur
division and regions of Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Naogaon, Sirajganj, and Jessore, may continue and spread, says the
Met Office.
While people were forced to limit their outdoor activities in many districts, children and elderly people were found suffering the most yesterday, report our correspondents.
People like day labourers and rickshaw-pullers were also distressed, as they could not find work amidst the cold wave.
With inadequate warm clothing at their disposal, poor people of these areas were seen trying to stay warm by lighting small fires.
Dhaka also continued to feel the chill yesterday, with the Met Office recording the capital’s temperature at 16.8 Celsius at the morning.
The Met office said the weather in the city may remain dry with occasional drizzle, while moderate to thick fog may occur from midnight till morning. Night temperature may also fall slightly, said the Met Office.
Meanwhile, different areas of the country, especially Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram, might witness a light drizzle on Friday evening. Temperatures in these regions might drop further as a result. But it might not lead to a cold wave
The night temperature may fall slightly and the day temperature may remain nearly unchanged across the country.
“Temperature may remain unchanged for the next two days. It’ll start rising after the next three days,” said meteorologist Haque.
