Commoners� participation can expedite civic services

RAJSHAHI: Effective participation of community people is very vital to expedite the civic services especially towards the poor and marginalised communities, member of the civil society here mentioned, reports BSS.They viewed that participation of the mass people needs to be supportive to make the service delivery activities more transparent and accountable. There has to be proper monitoring so more people's participation in all other civic services can be ensured.
Time has come to improve democratic practices in urban local governance institutions through social accountability for improving the provisions for basic services like water and sanitation to the city's poor households.
"Social Responsibility Institutionalisation and Mass-participation" should be our main slogan and thrust, said Prof Shirin Sufiya Khanom, former chairman of Rajshahi Education Board, while taking to BSS. She underscored the need for ensuring safe drinking water and hygienic sanitation for the poor and extreme poor communities in the city for improving their livelihood so that their plights are reduced to a greater extent.
Prof Khanom mentioned that there should be appropriate measures of building the city as planned way besides environmentally sound so that it can cope with the abnormal situation of environmental degradation in the wake of rushing huge people to the city every year.
Promoting environmental health services like solid waste, medical waste, food and water safety and municipal financial reformation through enabling public private partnership, citizens participation, gender responsive and pro-poor targeting should be given priority.
To this end, construction of sanitary landfills for solid waste management, modern slaughterhouse, food laboratory and training center has become an urgent need, Child Specialist Prof Dr A B Siddiqui added.
