Bangladesh take on Zimbabwe in first T20 today

Sports Reporter

Bangladesh will be looking forward to finding out its best combination for the upcoming Asia Cup and World T20 in the two-match T20 series against Zimbabwe, starting at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium at Mirpur today. The match will hit the pitch at 5pm. The Asia Cup in Bangladesh will be of T20 format this year, just before the World T20, slated to be held in India in March. Given the Tigers’ lackluster performance in the shortest format of the cricket, Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Bin Mortaza said the two-match T20 series would be their best opportunity to correct the mistakes ahead of the upcoming two multi-national tournaments. “Honestly, we are not a good T20 team, our record in this format do not speak in our favour,” Mortaza said. Bangladesh played 44 matches in this format and won just 12 matches, including victories over West Indies, New Zealand and South Africa. This year, the Tigers played three matches, won against Pakistan but lost two matches against South Africa. However, Mortaza wants the confidence gained from three-match ODI series over Zimbabwe to be carried forward to the T20 series. “It’s equally right we are now on top of our form and gained a huge confidence by sweeping the ODI series. Hopefully we can carry it forward,” he said. “The series is our best chance to sort out our best T20 combination for the upcoming Asia Cup and World T20. It’s also the best chance to find out the technical mistakes and other errors ahead of those two crucial tournaments.” Mashrafe at the same time warned his side about the backlash of Zimbabwe. “In this format of cricket, the difference between big and small teams reduces by a considerable margin. So nothing can be taken for granted in this format. We’ve to be alert.” When Bangladesh wants to carry the success forward by signing off the year on a winning note, Zimbabwe eye to restore some pride to reduce the battering in the ODI series. “Obviously it was disappointing to lose but it’s a new version. Just need to make sure that we bounce back and come up on top,” Zimbabwe captain Elton Chigumbura said.
