Ijtema begins in Jessore

Tens of thousands of devotees are taking part in a three-day Ijtema that began at the New Town area in Jessore after Fajr prayers yesterday. Devotees filled up the spaces of Upashahar College, King Faisal Institute and Shapla Kindergarten School and adjacent areas. Engineer Raushan Monir, Maulana Abdul Bar and Maulana Monir delivered speeches on the first day of the Ijtema. Shafin Mahmud, assistant superintendent of police, Jessore said: “Some 200 members of law enforcing agencies have been deployed in the venue at 20 points. Besides, 2000 volunteers will also be engaged there for maintaining discipline,” he added. Sources said ten medical teams will provide treatment to the devotees. Tents have been set up and toilet and bathroom facilities arranged for the devotees. The Ijtema will conclude after Zohar prayers on Saturday.
LGED engineer injured

A sub-assistant engineer of Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) was allegedly manhandled by Juba League leader Mamun Peyada at Dashmin-Vanga bridge road in Dashmina upazila on Wednesday. while the sub-assistant engineer was on-duty there for on going carpeting work. According to LGED office sources, sub-assistant engineer Abdul Khaleque came under attack when he stopped the Juba League leader from using the road that was just being carpeted. At this, Mamun Peyada became angry and kicked the engineer leaving him injured. The inured engineer was admitted to Dashmina upazila health complex. Hossain Ali Mir, Dashmina LGED engineer, said they are preparing to file a case with Dashmina police station in this connection.
Woman commits suicide

An unidentified woman allegedly committed suicide by jumping under the wheels of a speeding train at Golaghat of Sreepur upazila in Gazipur district on Dhaka-Mymensingh rail route yesterday. She was about 30 years old. The identity of the deceased could not be known immediately. Locals said the woman, who was running along the rail line, suddenly jumped under the wheels of Dhaka-bound DEMU train. She died on the spot. Assistant sub-inspector of Joydebpur railway junction police outpost Dadon Miah said GRP (Government Railway Police) recovered the body and sent it to Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy. However, on Wednesday, another woman committed suicide along with her son at Salna area of Gazipur city by jumping under a speeding train.
