A school for deaf and dumb in Jhenidah, inaugurated by Prime Minister Shekh Hasina in 2013, is yet to appoint any staff and enroll any student. The complex having six buildings, three 2-storey and three 3-storey, was built with an expenditure amounting to about Tk10 cores, which includes the cost of land, in 2005. Built on four acres of land at Mothurapur village on the side of Jhenidah-Harinakundu road was handed over to health department in 2008. Civil Surgeon of Jhenidah Dr Abdus Salam said there are at least 1.5 lakh children and disable people in Jhenidah. Among them, over 30,000 children are deaf and dumb and they are not getting any service. The whole project is still lying under the Social and Welfare Department in Jhenidah. Acting district officer of Jhenidah Social and Welfare Department Mominur Rahman said he has written to the Ministry of Health asking for creating necessary posts. He said it now all depends on the ministry for operation of the school. The grills, bathroom fittings, ventilators, electric fittings and other materials are being damaged or stolen for lack of maintenance and proper care. Locals alleged that the complex has now become the den of criminals. Drug addicts have found the place a safe haven for them.
