Social networking platform Facebook did not respond to several requests by Bangladesh government seeking data on users between the period of January and June this year.
During the six months’ time, the government requested Facebook authorities to provide it data regarding three users. However, the social networking platform did not respond to all the three requests by the government. The disclosure was made public in Facebook’s Global Government Requests Report on Wednesday.
Regarding requests made by governments, Facebook said, “We respond to valid requests relating to criminal cases.”
“Each and every request we receive is checked for legal sufficiency and we reject or require greater specificity on requests that are overly broad or vague,” according to the social networking company. In its report, the company also said, "Facebook does not provide any government with "back doors" or direct access to people's data.”
Facebook said content restrictions and government requests for data has surged in the first half of 2015 ad that the social networking giant has seen continuous increase of such requests since it began publicly releasing such data two years ago.
Government requests for account data globally jumped 18 per cent in the first half of 2015 to 41,214 accounts, up from 35,051 requests in the second half of 2014, Facebook said in a blog post.
