Two suspected drug traders of Rohingya community were killed in a reported gunfight with Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in Nalbania bordering area in Ukhiya upazila early yesterday.
The deceased were identified as Md Siddique, 30, and Md Shahjahan, 36, of Balukhali Rohingya camp in Ukhiya.
Lt Col Ali Hayder Azad, commander, BGB-34, said a BGB team stopped a group of drug traders while they were crossing the Naf River at Nalbonia point with huge drugs around 5 am.
Hindered yaba traders opened fire at BGB members forcing them to fire back that triggered the gunfight, leaving two Rohingyas severely injured, he added.
They were taken to Ukhiya Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared them
dead. BGB members recovered 40,000 yaba tablets, a local gun, and two cartridges from the spot.
