Fazle Hasan Abed, the founder of non-government development organisation BRAC, will be laid to eternal rest at Banani graveyard in Dhaka today. Before buried, his body will be placed on the Army Stadium for two hours from 10.30 am to 12.30 pm to let the people to pay their last tribute and respects, said a press release. His Namaz-e-Janaza will also be held there at 12.30 pm before his burial.
He breathed his last at the Apollo Hospital in the city around 8:30 pm on Friday battling a brain tumour at the age of 83, leaving his wife a daughter and a son. Meanwhile, condolences poured in from across the globe at the sad demise of Fazle Hasan Abed. Dignitaries at home and abroad expressed their shock, sadness and great loss due to the death of the visionary. Many termed him as a role model, an extraordinary person forever to be remembered at heart and a legend.
Shahidul Islam termed his death an an irreparable loss to humanity while Dr Salehuddin Ahmed said he was a global leader and a role model for all of us. Melinda Gates of Bill and Mellinda Gates Foundation said “We will forever draw inspiration from his work,” while Former US President Bill Clinton said he was a great gift to humanity. Former World Bank President Jim Yong Kim said Fazle Hasan Abed’s life is a lesson for all. Others sending condolence messages include (in no particular order) former US Ambassador Dan Mozena, Professor Wahid Uddin Mahmud, cricketer Shakib Al Hasan, Nigel Brett of IFAD, Kevin Watkins of Save the Children, Sofeena Lalani of British Red Cross, Vilupti Christina Lok Corlis of Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada, Atiur Rahman, Jack Sim of World Toilet Organisation, Tomoo Hozumi and Henrietta H Fore from Unicef.
