Following the resounding success of the current party leadership during the last three consecutive Awami League-led governments, the party yesterday (Saturday) iterated its faith in the existing leadership by re-electing almost all of them to their present positions.
No new faces were inducted into the key positions of the Awami League Central Working Committee, the highest policy making body of the party, at its two-day 21st national council session that began at the historic Suhrawardy Udyan on Friday. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Obaidul Quader have been re-elected as president and general secretary for the next three years at the second session at the auditorium of the Institute of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) yesterday.
Hasina was re-elected Awami League president for the ninth consecutive time since 1981, while Quader was re-elected general secretary for the second consecutive time.
All of the Presidium and Advisory Council members of the outgoing committee have retained their posts in the new committee, while the outgoing committee’s joint general secretaries, Mahbubul Alam Hanif and Dipu Moni, have also retained their previous positions.
Besides, some central leaders have been promoted to better positions in the central committee considering their performance.

Secretary, Dr Hasan Mahmud, and organising secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim have been made joint general secretaries of the new executive committee.
Former joint general secretaries Jahangir Kabir Nanak and Abdur Rahman have been made presidium members in the new committee, while former Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan was also made AL presidium member.
Earlier, AL presidium member Advocate Abdul Matin Khasru proposed Sheikh Hasina’s name as president, while Presidium member Pijush Kanti Bhattacharya supported it with the mass backing of councillors from across the country.
The name of Quader was proposed as AL general secretary by Jahangir Kabir Nanak, and Abdur Rahman supported it.
Three-member Election Commission chairman, Advocate Yusuf Hossain Humayun, declared Sheikh Hasina re-elected as AL president and Obaidul Quader as general secretary as nobody else contested for the posts.
Other members of the commission are Dr Mashiur Rahman and Professor Saidur Rahman.
The outgoing committee’s organising secretaries, Ahmed Hossain, BM Mozammel Haque and Abu Sayeed Al Mahmud Swapan, remain in the same posts of the new committee, while outgoing central committee members, SM Kamal Hossain and Mirza Azam, have been promoted as organising secretaries of the new committee.
However, according to the AL constitution, the party is supposed to have eight organising secretaries. The names of five have been announced and the names of three would be announced later.
Office secretary of the outgoing committee, Dr Abdus Sobhan Golap, has been made publicity and publication secretary of the new committee, while Barrister Biplob Barua has been promoted to the post of office secretary from that of deputy office secretary.
Shammi Akter, Delwar Hossain, Engineer Abdus Sabur, Mrinal Kanti Das, Harunur Rashid, Asim Kumar Ukil, Shamsunnahar Chapa, Dr. Rokeya Sultana, Faridunnahar Laily , Sujit Roy Nandi and Meher Afroz Chumki have also retained their secretariat posts for international affairs, forest and environment, science and technology, Liberation War affairs, youth and sports, cultural affairs, education and human resources, health and population affairs, agriculture and cooperatives, relief and social welfare and women affairs, respectively.
The outgoing committee’s central member, Advocate Nazibullah Hiru, has been made law affairs secretary in the new committee.
After the announcement of the new committee, the Prime Minister thanked the AL leaders and workers for re-electing her as the party president, and urged them to work sincerely for further strengthening the organisation.
Sheikh Hasina said: “I have been leading the party for the last 38 years. So, you (the councillors) will have to consider my age (in future).”
The AL president sought the blessings of all to run the party according to their (councillors) aspirations.
Later, the party leaders greeted Sheikh Hasina and Obaidul Quader with bouquets.
