Joypurhat Sugar Mills resumes production

UNB, Joypurhat

Joypurhat Sugar Mills resumed production in the current season on Friday afternoon.

Anwar Hossain Akanda, managing director of the mills, with officials, staff, labourers and their leaders, and sugarcane producers inaugurated the 57th sugarcane crushing programme around 4pm.

A special prayer was also offered before the mill went into action. Abdus Salam Fakir, director general, agriculture department of the mill, said they have fixed a target of crushing 55,000mts sugarcane and producing 4,670mts sugar in 40 working days. Joypurhat Sugar Mills is situated on a 3,000-acre plot in the district.

Md Rabbik Hasan, the general director of finance of the sugar mills, said the largest state-owned sugar mill had suffered a loss of Tk 65crore in the previous season.

Indian cosmetics seized

UNB, Benapole

BGB members seized Indian cosmetics worth Tk 2.5 crore from Talshari area of Benapole on Friday.

Lt Col Md Selim Reza, Commanding Officer of BGB 49 Battalion, said they were tipped off about the smuggling bid. "BGB members seized a covered van carrying Indian cosmetics worth Tk 2.54 crore. The consignment was being smuggled into Bangladesh from India," he said.

The seized cosmetics and covered van were kept at the Benapole divisional customs warehouse. A case was lodged at Benapole Port Police Station in this connection.

Youth killed by ‘rival group’

UNB, Jhalakathi

A youth was killed and three others were injured allegedly by their rival group during a dispute over harvesting paddy in Deuri village in Sadar upazila of Jhalakathi on Friday.

The deceased was identified as Jahidul Islam, son of

Jalal Khan.

Family members of the victim said Jahidul, his father, along with Ramzan Khan and Shahjahan Khan tried to stop a group, led by Faruk Hawlader, from taking paddy from a piece of disputed land in the afternoon.

The rival group attacked them, leaving Jahidul severely injured, they said.
