Farmers in Noakhali region have brought vast tracts of land under beans cultivation in the hope of reaping more profits.
This correspondent saw farmers cultivating beans in shoal areas of Noakhali during this Rabi season after getting a bumper production with lucrative prices last year.
Farmers of Noakhali Sadar and Subarnchar are expecting bumper production of beans this year due to favorable weather and seeds available at fair prices. The target is to cultivate beans in these two places on 40,000 hectares.
According to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DEA), the target of producing 80,326 tonnes of beans has been fixed this season. Bean seeds are currently sold in local markets for TK 90–100 a kg, but last week they were sold for Tk 120–130 in local markets. This correspondent found farmers collecting beans from their fields to supply the crop at local markets.
Md Mizan, a marginal farmer of Selim Bazar under Subarnachar upazila, Dulal, a poor man, used to grind beans to make his ends meet. But thanks to beans cultivation, he is now doing well. His story is now an inspiration for local farmers.
Another grower of Sadar upazila, Hasan, said he cultivated beans on 50 acres of land in the hope of making good profits.
Sadar upazila agricultural officer Md Moshreful Hassan said that early variety of winter pulses have already appeared in the local markets. Their price remains reasonable at Tk 50–60.
When contacted, Subarnchar upazila agricultural officer Shahidul Islam told the Independent: "We are trying to cultivate high-value crops in homesteads and fallow land. The district has seen rapid expansion of ‘flat beans’ farming in recent years."
