SC order paves way for arrest of MP Rana

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has cleared the way for police to arrest Awami League lawmaker of Tangail-3 Amanur Rahman Khan Rana and his brother Shahidur Rahman Khan in the Faruk Ahmed murder case by scrapping an earlier High Court order over the case.
In response to an appeal filed by the government, a three-member bench of the Appellate Division led by Justice Nazmun Ara Sultana canceled a High Court order that had directed the law enforcers not to harass Amanur and Shahidur or arrest them without due legal procedure and also directed the two to surrender before the trial court.
There is no legal bar to arrest Amanur and Shahidur following the apex court order, Deputy Attorney General Ekramul Haque Tutul said yesterday.
On January 18, police recovered bullet-riddled body of district Awami League leader Faruk Ahmed. Later, his wife Nahar Ahmed filed a murder case with Tangail Sadar Thana.
Police later found evidence of involvement of Amanur and his three brothers in the murder, according to a report published in the Bangla daily Prothom Alo on September 14 last year.
Fearing arrest or harassment, Amanur and Shahidur, in July this year, moved a petition before the HC seeking anticipatory bail in the case.
On July 14, the HC directed law enforcers not to harass or arrest MP Rana without due legal procedures.
