Secy-level meet in Delhi Nov 16-18

Fixing of service charges for transit and transshipment of Indian goods through Ashuganj port will be finalised at a shipping secretary-level meeting to be held on November 16-18 in New Delhi. A 12-member Bangladesh delegation led by Shipping Secretary Shafiq Alam Mehdi will leave for India on November 14 to attend the meeting, shipping ministry sources said. Other members of the delegation are—Director General of prime minister’s office Subrata Roy, Additional Secretary of shipping ministry Nasir Arif Mahmud, Mongla port Member (operational) Mohammad Altaf Hossain, Joint Secretary of law ministry Sayeed Ahmed, Chief Engineer of department of shipping Fakhrul Islam, Director of foreign ministry Monwar Hossain, Deputy Secretary of Shipping Ministry Syful Islam, National Revenue Board Member Sultan Mohammad Iqbal, Chittagong port terminal manager Enamul Karim, BIWTA Director Shafiqul Huq and Gulf Orient Managing Director Sheikh Mahfuj Hamid. According to sources, the meeting will finalise the charges for the transit and transshipment of Indian goods using Bangladesh’s Ashuganj port as transshipment point under ‘Protocol on Inland Water Transit and Trade (PIWTT)’.  
Besides, both the country will sign standard operating procedure (SOP) to implement coastal shipping agreement at the meeting. At the meeting, the two countries will also fix the financial responsibilities for Bangladesh, India and Bhutan for taking assistance from the World Bank in order to increase the navigability of the shipping protocol routes, sources said. The meeting will also ratify the uses of Chittagong and Mongla ports and there will be talks discussing the plying of passenger and tourist vessels between Bangladesh and India as per an MoU signed earlier. The last shipping secretary-level meeting was held in New Delhi on April 20-23 this year. MoUs on coastal shipping agreement, PIWTT and uses of Chittagong port were signed during the visit of Indian premier Narendra Modi to Bangladesh on June 6 this year.
