DUJA delegation meets president
A delegation of Dhaka University Journalists Association (DUJA), led by Dhaka University Vice Chancellor Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique, met President Abdul Hamid on Thursday. During the meeting, the delegation apprised the president of the associations activities and invited him to attend their reunion programme marking its 30th founding anniversary, said presidents press secretary Joynal Abedin. Abdul Hamid said taking up journalism as a career during ones student life is really a good initiative. He said campus reporters should have the mentality to work freely and continue that attitude during their full professional life.
Youth killed in clash
A man was killed and 15 others injured in clash over taking possession of a water body at Joynagar village of Sylhet district on Wednesday afternoon. The deceased was Nazrul Islam, 35, a resident of the village. Quoting locals, police said there had been a longstanding dispute between the men of London expatriate Gias Uddin and over villagers over possession of the water body. The clash ensued with a local Dabir Uddin when the supporters of Gias Uddin went to the water body around 5pm. Nazrul received bullet and died on the spot. Fifteen people were also critically injured. They were taken to MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital. Police also arrested five people from the village in this connection. Asaduzzaman, officer-in-charge of Jagannathpur police station, confirmed the incident.
Jamaat leader arrested
Police arrested a leader of Bangladesh Jamaat-3-Islami from his house in Dakkin Surma Upazila of Sylhet district on Wednesday night. The arrestee was Lokman Ahmed, former upazila chairman of Dakkin Surma upazila and secretary of Sylhet district north Jamaat. Police said, a team of Dakkin Surma police raided the house of the leader and arrested him. Lokman was wanted in several cases. Later, he was produced before the court and the court sent him jail.
Medicine trader killed
A group of unidentified miscreants killed a local medicine trader in Bade Moskur village of Rangpur district on Tuesday night, police sources said. ABM Zahedul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kawnia police station, said the miscreants attacked medicine trader Rahamat Ali, 55, while he was returning home from his nearby shop around 11:30 pm. The miscreants hacked Rahamat to death with sharp weapon and left the place. Being informed, a special police squad from Kawnia Thana rushed to the spot, recovered the body and sent it to Rangpur Medical College Hospital morgue for conducting autopsy.
Workshop held at NU
A day long workshop on e-filing for the senior officials was held on National University campus at Board Bazar in Gazipur on Wednesday. Vice-Chancellor Harun-ur-Rashid was the chief guest in the workshop. Vice-Chancellor Harun-ur-Rashid said the management systems of National University are being restructured totally based on information technology to build the university as a modern, dynamic service oriented university. As part of this activity, we have already been completed the decentralization of administrative activities of six regional centres, start one stop service centre, introduced online admission, distributed registration and admission card to the students and college transfer application in online system, and started E-tender system, he added. Pro-vice chancellor Monaz Ahmed Nur and Mohammed Aslam Bhuiyan (Administration), Treasurer Mohammad Noman-ur-Rashid, registrar and heads of the different offices were present in the workshop.
Give recognition to women farmers
A workshop titled Recognition and Rights of Women Farmers in Bangladesh was held at Chamber Bhavan in Rangpur city recently. The programme was organided by Society for Media and Suitable Human-Communication Tchnique (SoMaSHTe) and funded by OXFAM. A total 30 journalists from different print and electronic media participated in the programme. In the programme, speakers emphasized on giving national recognition to the contributions of women farmers in food security in the country. They also discussed the media role in establishing the rights of the women farmers.
Road carpeting work opens
Mayor of Rangpur City Corporation (RCC) Alhaj Sarfuddin Ahmed Jhantu has launched construction of road carpeting works in Shimulbag area near Medical Purbo Gate in Rangpur city. The mayor, also a freedom fighter, formally inaugurated the road carpeting works by cutting ribbon at a ceremony arranged there on Wednesday afternoon as the chief guest. With City Councilor Shafikul Islam Dulal for Ward No-19 in the chair,female City Councilor Anju Monwara Begum, Executive Engineer of RCC Azam Ali, civil society members and local elite attended the ceremony, among others. The RCC has been implementing the road carpeting works at own resources under phase-wise construction packages of 142 separate roads, drains,culverts, drainage systems and other infrastructures in 142 groups in the city at Taka 33 crore.
