The High Court yesterday directed the government to remove all illegal structures from the banks of the River Padma within 30 days.
The HC bench comprising Justice Quazi Rezaul-Ul Hoque and Justice Abu Taher Md Saifur Rahman also asked the authorities concerned to remove all fences built for fishing on the river between Madaripur and Munshiganj within the same deadline.
The HC also directed the government to submit a report before the court by December 13 after complying with the order. The HC bench came up with the directive in response to a writ petition filed by SC lawyer Advocate Kamruzzaman Kochi seeking its directive over the matter. The petition alleged that illegal structures were reportedly built on the banks of the Padma River and illegal fences were also set up in the river for fishing which is causing environmental degradation in the surrounding areas.
Counsel’s petitioner Advocate ABM Altaf Hossain said the environment and water flow of the Padma River are damaged due to the illegal structures built in and around the river.
During hearing, he prayed to the court to direct the govt to remove the structures and fences from the river and its banks and to take action against those responsible for building illegal structures and fences.
