The Speedy Trial Tribunal-3 of Dhaka yesterday sentenced Oishee Rahman to death for killing her parents, Mahfuzur Rahman and Swapna Rahman, in 2013.
The tribunal also fined her Tk. 40,000, and failure to pay it would invite two years in prison. In a jam-packed courtroom, judge Md Sayeed Ahmed delivered the verdict in Oishee’s presence. She broke down after hearing it.
The tribunal also sentenced her friend Mizanur Rahman Roni to two years’ rigorous imprisonment and slapped a fine of Tk. 5,000 for sheltering Oishee after the murders. Roni will remain behind bars for another month if he fails to pay the fine.
Another friend of Oishee, Asaduzzaman Jony, who faced charges of abetment, was acquitted. In the order, the tribunal asserted that Oishee was an “adult” when she killed her parents and hence there was no scope to consider her case softly. It also pointed out that she did not kill her parents in a drunken state. The murder was planned thoroughly and with the support of someone else. She was mentally sound during the murders, the tribunal observed.
Oishee’s lawyer Mahbub Hassan Rana told reporters that they would file an appeal in the High Court against the verdict. He said that the order would spark a controversy since it says that “Oishee did not murder her parents in a drunken state”. In the charge-sheet, however, police had mentioned that Oishee was “addicted” when she killed her parents, he noted.
Rana expressed hope that the High Court would ease the addiction controversy.
On the other hand, special public prosecutor Mohammad Mahbubur Rahman expressed satisfaction with the verdict, saying that the tribunal has served justice by pronouncing the death penalty.
On August 16, 2013, Special Branch inspector Mahfuzur Rahman and his wife, Swapna Rahman, were found dead with stab wounds in their apartment in Malibagh area of the capital. Police found the bodies two days after their death. On the same day, 19-year-old Oishee had surrendered at Paltan Police Station along with their domestic help Sumi.
Mahfuzur’s brother, Mohammad Mashiur Rahman Rubel, lodged a complaint at the police station on August 17 against Oishee and her two friends, Asaduzzaman and Mizanur. Abul Khayer, inspector of the police’s detective branch, submitted two separate charge-sheets—one against Oishee and her two friends on March 9, 2014, and a separate one against Sumi as she was a juvenile.
According to the charge-sheets, Oishee alone killed her parents, Jony instigated the murders and Rony gave her shelter after the incident. Sumi was accused of assisting Oishee in hiding the bodies. The charge-sheet also said the couple had been given seven sedatives in tea before they were stabbed. The trial started on July 8, 2014. Of the 49 witnesses, 39 deposed before the tribunal. The trial against Sumi, 11, now out on bail, is pending with the first additional metropolitan sessions judge’s court in Dhaka.
