Stock market recovered yesterday to close a volatile week when sell pressure was higher than buying activities. The major price indices also hit nearly six-month low at the premier bourse where investors were skeptical about future prospect, reports BSS.
The broader DSEX price index of Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) closed the week with a recovery of 62.03 points to 4433.57, but it was 69 points down from the past week’s closing at 4502.16.
The two selective indices - the blue-chip DS30 and the Shariah DSES - also finished the week in green at 1689.08 and 1067.47 respectively. Like DSEX, the indices too lost significantly compared to the previous week’s close.
The daily average turnover in value fell marginally to Tk 298 crore, but the average volume rose to 83.51 crore shares from the last week’s 8.24 crore shares because of higher selling.
The market remained for buyers all through the week when only 67 securities gained against 245 declining issues.
Like last week, all the major sectors also closed lower, with NBFI losing most (-10.31 per cent) followed by fuel and power ((-5.69 per cent), mutual fund (-3.53 per cent), IT (-3.51 per cent) and textile (-3.31 per cent).
The major losing companies of the week were Zaheen Spinning (-21.6 per cent), ICB (-20.0 per cent) and Pharma Aid (-17.90 per cent).
Food and allied was the week’s lone gaining sector, with Modern Dye (29.6 per cent), Aramit (16.8 per cent), IPDC (16.7 per cent) and Standard Ceramic (12.3 per cent) the most advancing issues. The heavyweights Titas Gas lost 15.0 per cent market capitalisation.
Pharma, engineering and fuel and power were the sector the week’s movers.
Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) closed the week positive yesterday, with its major CSCX gaining over 98.15 points to finish at 8232.27. Compared to previous week, the index closed lower.
Out of the day’s 220 issues traded, only 153 gained and 47 incurred losses when over 68 lakh shares changed hands for Tk 20.44 crore.
