The European Union (EU) yesterday expressed satisfaction over the signing a deal on satellite Bangabandhu-1, and mentioned that the EU and Bangladesh are being driven by a sense of modernity, reports UNB.
Ambassador and Head of the European Union Delegation to Bangladesh Pierre Mayaudon conveyed it through a statement after a day of signing a $248-million deal with French company Thales Alenia Space for manufacturing and launching the country's first satellite.
“It opens up an avenue of cooperation in multiple space applications embracing the marine environment and climate change,” he said.
The EU diplomat said it is also a strong symbol of the deepening partnership between the EU and Bangladesh being driven by a sense of modernity.
He mentioned that through the agreement the European company will provide Bangladesh with its first-ever satellite is a mark of confidence in the contribution that European technology can bring to Digital Bangladesh.
On Wednesday, Bangla-desh signed the deal with French company Thales Alenia Space. The company has to complete the project by 2017, according to the deal. But if it fails to meet the deadline, it will have to pay fines. The total project cost will run into Tk 2,967.95 crore, with about 56 per cent of the fund coming from foreign loans.
The government will provide the rest.
