Media reported the heinous murders of two husbands by their wives in Sylhet recently . In the latest such incident the wife had beheaded the head of her husband while he was peacefully sleeping in his home. She then buried the head near the homestead. Later she dragged the rest of the body to a jungle nearby at night thinking of escaping notice. The details of the other murder of husband by wife some months ago were not much dissimilar and reeked of the worst depravity on the part of the woman involved.
These murder incidents centering on cruelty shown by our women are symbolic of the changing times. The grisly murders of the husbands by their wives seem to send out a chilling message that some of our women are becoming increasingly devoid of decent human impulses of care and consideration these days. In both the cases the victims were asleep while they were done to death. A person lost in slumber is helpless. Killing of such a person is an abominable act .
Not only the above incidents, on opening newspapers –nowadays—cases of extramarital affairs of women and their killing of their husbands with hired assassins or their paramours, are regularly noted. Where the traditional values, principles and ethics have gone ? It was traditionally expected that a housewife would be the epitome of many virtues. Killing of housewives by husbands is a common phenomenon in a male-dominated and patriarchal society. May be marital discords, problems of adjustment, non-payment of demanded dowry lead to killing of housewives. But who can disagree that the age-old tradition of keeping women under male domination or subjugation is changing. Our women now are enjoying more freedom than ever before. Conscious of their rights with a financial standing, many women have been graduated to the decision-making process. The empowerment of women in society amply testifies that men are in a compromising stand with their spouses.
As reported, in the latest husband murdering incident in Sylhet the woman was allegedly being repressed by her husband. Well, if she could not bear the torture, she could leave him and take the help of law or seek divorce. How could she go for such unthinkable bestiality of decapitating her husband’s head? This kind of barbarity defies explanation. Socialists may brand the murders of two husbands as isolated incidents. But clearly this argument is not tenable. Ii is best to recognize the problem for what it really is. In these cases, they represent the growing recklessness and care nothing attitude of a considerable number of female folks in our society.
In the past, it was the notion that women were at the receiving end of repression perpetrated by their male counterparts but now it seems that men are at the receiving end of repression by women. Repressions of males by females, as cited by a lawmaker in the parliament sometime ago, triggered a roar of laughter. But it is high time for all concerned to delve deep into the malaise and find out the remedy.
