Chinese President Xi Jinping (R) and Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou appear before journalists at Shangrila Hotel in Singapore on November 7, ahead of a historic summit since the two sides’ traumatic 1949 split. The two leaders talked for an hour, with Xi praising the event as opening a “historic chapter in our relations” and repeating China’s oft-expressed desire for eventual reunification. However, no agreements were announced between the two sides that still refuse to formally recognise each other’s legitimacy.
