The University Grants Commission (UGC) yesterday ordered all public universities to discontinue all classes for evening courses, saying they have been tarnishing the image of the educational institutions. The UGC gave this latest order in a press release yesterday. In a 13-point directive, the UGC also stressed proper execution of the vice- chancellor's responsibilities, seeking the commission's approval before opening a new department or creating a new position, and adherence to university rules while giving employment and promotion.
The press release was signed by Dr Shamsul Arefin, director of the communication and information rights department of the UGC. The release also said that a letter in this regard had been sent to the vice-chancellors of all public universities.
A move to issue the latest directive began two days after President M Abdul Hamid criticised the evening courses in public universities, saying that a section of teachers have turned the universities into business institutions, disrupting their overall academic environment.
