17 houses gutted in Kurigram

UNB, Kurigram

Seventeen houses belonging to six families were destroyed in a fire that broke out at Nilkhantho village in Sadar upazila on Tuesday night.

Aminul Islam, no 3 ward commissioner of Belgacha union, said the fire originated from Hamid Mia's house around 12:15am and soon engulfed the adjoining houses of Rafiqul, Abdur Rashid, Badsha, Hanif, and Saidul.

Three cows were burnt to death. All the goods including furniture and crops were gutted in the fire. On information, a fire fighting team rushed to the spot around 2am and doused the fire after four hours of frantic effort, said Monoranjan Sarkar, deputy assistant director of Kurigram Fire Service.

Youth arrested with gold

UNB, Satkhira

Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) arrested a young man with 500 grams of gold from Bhomra border in the Sadar upazila yesterday.

The arrestee was identified as Sajib Hossain, 30, son of Rafiqul Islam of Laxmidari village in the upazila.

Tipped off, a team of BGB conducted a drive in the area and arrested Sajib along with the gold while crossing the border, said Nayek Subedar Harun-or-Rashid.

20 maunds of jatka seized

 OUR CORRESPONDENT, Chandpur

Members of Bangladesh Coastguard in a drive seized about 20 maunds of jatka from a Dhaka bound launch MV Kanafuly-13 at Mohona area in the Meghna River near Chandpur town on Tuesday morning.

Later, the seized jatka was distributed among the poor, distressed and orphans of the district town.  According to the Bangladesh Coastguard Chandpur source, acting on a tip off, the coastguard members led by station commander Lt ASM Lutfor Rahman along with Sadar Upazila Fisheries officer Mahbub Rashid intercepted the Dhaka bound launch MV Karnafuly  at Mohona area in the middle of the Meghna river near Chandpur town at 4 am and recovered illegal jatkas which kept in the baskets and drums.
