Mahmudullah Riyad finally propped up his game when it mattered most. It however didn’t come before a drama was staged. His explosion in the last five overs helped Bangladesh post a healthy total of 276 for nine but there was plenty of debate surrounding his run-out call.
Later Bangladesh, who fielded an unchanged side, clinched the series 3-0 by winning the third match yesterday by 61 runs. By virtue of winning the match, Bangladesh posted their 11th whitewash series victory. Incidentally it was sixth successive ODI series win for Bangladesh at home yard.
He was finally trapped run out in the penultimate ball of the innings but before then he smashed a 40 ball-52.
The World Cup hero of Bangladesh has been in tricky form since his consecutive two centuries in the cricket’s biggest extravaganza.
He had just one fifty in the last eight matches after the World Cup heroics. Though his poor form went unnoticed because of Bangladesh continuous winning streak, his reputation as one of the mainstays of Bangladesh’s middle order was at stake.
Riyad’s service at this point was badly needed. And he didn’t disappoint. Guiding the lower order in impeccable fashion he took the side in a position of dominance. Bangladesh finally amassed 276 for nine as it looked they even couldn’t propel past 250.
He survived from a run out dismissal in 45th over as the wicket-keeper Regis Chakabva broke the stumps accidentally with his gloves before fielder’s direct throw hit the stumps. Chakabva was aware of his mistakes and once again pulled out the stump as Mahmudullah headed towards the dressing room. TV umpire Enamul Haque gave his final verdict as not out. Zimbabwe players looked displeased over the decision and they gathered in the centre of the ground to hold a discussion. However after a while they returned in the game.
He later said in host TV: “The wicket was slow. Mash played a good cameo. I could not capitalise but credit to the top-order batsmen. I don’t know whether I was out or not out (in the case of run out). We should respect the umpire’s decision. He is the judge.”
