Opener Tamim Iqbal earned the distinctive credentials to be highest run-getter amongst Bangladesh cricketers at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium (SBNCS) yesterday.
By smashing 73-run knock, Tamim first provided a solid platform for the home team alongside set a couple of milestone for his personal boosting. He inserted his name beside Sanath Jayasuriya, Inzamam-ul-Haque, Saaed Anwar, Kumar Sanggakara, Ricky Ponting and Shakib Al Hasan after scoring 2000 plus runs at a specific ground.
Tamim first touched the 2000-run mark as the second batsman and then set the new milestone surpassing Shakib Al Hasan’s previous record of 2050 runs at ‘Home
of Cricket’ of the country.
Along with that, he became the highest run-getter, making 2571 at home (all grounds of Bangladesh), as the first Bangladeshi player. He made it playing 81 matches with the highest 132. His next rival is Mushfiqur Rahim, who scored 2430 with the best of 117 from 91 matches.
The left-handed opener slammed Luke Jongwe for four at cover to enter the 2000-run club after Shakib Al Hasan at specific ground.
Thereafter, the 26-year-old batsman set the landmark with a single when he sent Sikardar Raza’s second delivery of his seventh over at covers.
Tamim scored 2056 runs with four century alongside eight half-century but Shakib made 2050 with two century and 17 half-centuries. Both Shakib and Tamim needed 65 innings but while the former played 68 matches, Tamim needed 66. The next competitor of the pair is Mushfiqur Rahim, who scored 1988 runs from 68 matches.
On the other hand, Tamim shared a 147-run partnership with Imrul Kayes that was the fifth highest overall record at the opening stand. Earlier, Shahriar Hossain and Mehrab Hossain struck a 170-run opening partnership against Zimbabwe in 1999, Tamim Iqbal and Anamul Haque cracked a 158-run against Zimbabwe in 2014, Tamim Iqbal and Soumya Sarkar slammed 154-run against South Africa in 2015, Anamul Haque and Imrul Kayes made 150-run against Pakistan in 2015 at opening stand.
On a day when Tamim inscribed his name in record book, Kayes also kept all impressed upon his return to the international circuit. After scoring 76 in the last match, he continued the form by scoring 73. It was his 12th half-century but still he couldn’t convert it into his second century. In the last game, he played rash shot to be dismissed and in the third match too he played same kind of shot after being well set in the crease.
