‘Graft’ charges probe against JU VC

No directives yet from ministry: UGC

STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka

University Grants Commission (UGC) is yet to receive any directives from the Education Ministry to carry out investigation on the alleged graft charges against the incumbent Vice-chancellor (VC) of Jahangirnagar University. Commission sources said they would conduct the investigation if they get any directives from the ministry following the rules and regulations.  Education Minister Dipu Moni came up with a statement in the capital on Saturday that the UGC would probe into the alleged corruption charges against Jahangirnagar VC, following the obtained information and documents submitted by the teachers and students of the university.

The minister told the media that her ministry would send the dossiers to launch an investigation based on the papers to unearth the real scenario.  UGC member Prof Dil Afroz Begum told The Independent yesterday: “We still did not get any directives from the ministry. If the ministry sends any directives to conduct investigation about Jahangirnagar incident, we would do as per rules.” The Jahangirnagar University teachers and students launched a movement against the incumbent VC Farzana Islam, demanding her resignation for corruption and irregularities in development projects. Such allegation sparked intensified demonstration of teachers and students that led the university authorities to shut down its dormitories and classes as well as examinations for over one month to quell the movement. The university syndicate shut down the university on November 5.

However, the university reopened the padlocks of the dormitories on Thursday allowing the students to start living again. The authorities said the classes and examinations would start as per the schedule on December 8, which has brought a normalcy in the academic and administrative work of the university, filling up the silent vacuum of the university campus with vibrancy after a lull of one month.
