PM felicitates Suu Kyi

HUMAYUN KABIR BHUIYAN

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has expressed her desire to make the bilateral relations between Bangladesh and Myanmar multi-layered and inter-dependent under a future government of National League for Democracy (NLD) led by Aung San Suu Kyi.
Placing great emphasis on developing a deep mutual respect for each other, Hasina also made her willingness known to partner with Myanmar in creating proper atmosphere for peace, stability and progress in the region.
“We need to avail this opportunity to build on our historic ties and develop a deep mutual respect for each other’s people and cultures as we strive to make our bilateral relations multi-layered and inter-dependent,” said a congratulatory message by the prime minister to NLD chief Suu Kyi on Tuesday when it was being clear that the Nobel Laureate’s party was heading for a landslide victory in the elections.
“As Myanmar emerges as a democracy upholding universal values, I would like to reassure you that Bangladesh would be a willing partner of Myanmar in creating the right atmosphere for peace, stability and progress in South Asia and South East Asia,” said the premier in the message made available to The Independent.
“Yes, I handed the prime minister’s letter of felicitation for Suu Kyi over to NDL deputy chief Ti Oo on Tuesday,” Bangladesh Ambassador to Myanmar Sufiur Rahman told The Independent yesterday over telephone from Yangon.
“I was told by the NLD deputy chief that Bangladesh was the first country to felicitate,” he said.
“The Prime Minister also had a telephone conversation with Suu Kyi yesterday afternoon (Wednesday),” said the envoy, adding that he had no idea as to what the two leaders talked about over phone.
“We are engaged with Myanmar in a wide range of areas and hope to make the engagements even more dynamic in the days to come,” he said.
