BNP against plan to shift Zia's grave

STAFF REPORTER
BNP against plan to shift Zia's grave

The BNP vice-chairman, Maj (Retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, yesterday alleged that the government is conspiring to remove the grave of the late President, Ziaur Rahman, from Sher-e-Bangla Nagar out of political vengeance.
“It will hurt the people if the grave of Ziaur Rahman is demolished. We condemn the government move,” he told reporters.
Hafiz’s comments came after a news item was published in a Bangla daily yesterday that the government has decided to remove all structures, including the grave of Ziaur Rahman, from the Sangsad Bhaban complex outside the design of architect Louis I. Kahn.

The retired army officer said there is no elected government in the country and the present government is controlled by the police force.
“They do not bother about the feelings of ordinary people. The Awami League has given licence to the police to arrest Opposition leaders and activists,” he added.
Hafiz claimed that the law and order situation has deteriorated. “Enforced disappearances, killings and repressions against women and children have increased manyfold,” he said.
He regretted that an elderly leader like MK Anwar has been languishing in jail, as he has been implicated in “false cases.”
“The government, with all its repressive measures, would not be able to survive,” he said.
Asked whether the BNP would take part in local government polls under the party symbol, he said a decision would be taken after party chairperson Khaleda Zia returns.
Replying to a question, he said the government would be forced to quit through a movement, if its fails to respond to the proposal of Khaleda Zia to hold a national dialogue to resolve the current political impasse. Referring to cases against Tarique Rahman, Nazrul Islam Khan said it was not possible to keep track of cases and warrants of arrest against him.
He remarked that there is a saying in a game of cards. Play spades if there is no other card. Similarly, he is being framed in cases and warrants are issued, the BNP standing committee leader added.
He will return triumphantly as a hero as nothing, not even filing of cases or arrest warrants, would be able to deter him, Nazrul Islam further said. Tarique Rahman had left the country with permission from the court, he added.
The meeting was organised by the Jatiyatabadi Juba Dal, BNP’s youth front, in protest against the issue of warrant of arrest.
