Letters to the editor

Dear Sir,

In the past death rate of pregnant mothers and newborns was high in remote areas of the country due to insufficient knowledge and lack of proper training. Nowadays that scenario is changing as many trained midwives are working all around the country. They try to visit every home even in remote areas in order to spread awareness. Midwives work in Upazila Health Centers across Bangladesh to protect the health of mothers and newborns. A midwife's prime responsibility is to successfully manage maternal and newborn infant health, preventing unnecessary cesarean delivery. According to the current government's plan, from childbirth mothers will be under the supervision of a midwife for four months. I believe indeed this is a good plan. In France government and private organisations appoint midwives to look after the newly mothers and their children without any cost.  Since family based communities are becomes smaller day by day specially in the capital, the significance of midwives can be understood just by talking to newly mothers who does not have any relatives living with them.  It is noted that skilled and trained midwives are common in other countries of the world for many years; midwifery profession is recognised in Bangladesh since 2010. In order to help the midwives Bangladesh Midwifery Society .(BMS) was established in 2010.

The midwives are not only working for the welfare of the pregnant mother and the new born baby but also they dream of being self-reliant,  taking care of the family at the same time also becoming  economically  liberated.  I am acquainted with a young girl named Tania Akhter.

She completed her HSC in 2012, and started off her career after passing three-year diploma in midwifery from Dhaka Nursing College.

Tania also got the opportunity to participate in a conference on May 2016, held in Copenhagen, Denmark, with the help of UNFPA and the Bangladesh Midwifery Society. She is one of the many who are working as midwives and are able to financially support themselves and their families.  We should encourage more youths to pursue this dignified career.
