AL leader killed in Rangpur

Unknown miscreants killed a local leader of Awami League (AL) by slitting his throat at Choitir More in Rangpur Tuesday night.
The deceased was identified as Rahmat Ali, 50, former president of Tepa union unit of AL and a resident of the area. Witnesses said miscreants attacked Rahmat while he was returning home from his drugstore near his house at about 10:30 pm. Later, they slaughtered Rahmat and slit his throat to ensure his death and left the scene hurriedly.
Local people spotted the body at night and informed police. Police recovered the body and sent it to Rangpur Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy on Wednesday morning. Officer-in-charge of ABM Jahidul Islam confirmed the incident. A case was filed in this connection.

Pregnant woman kills self,  son in Gazipur

A pregnant woman along with her two-year-old son allegedly committed suicide by jumping under the wheels of a speeding train at Dakkhin Salna in the city early yesterday.
The deceased were identified as Fatema, 40, wife of Helal Uddin, a resident of Dakkhin Salna, and her son Fahad, 2.
Locals said Fatema along with her son Fahad jumped under a train in the area and died on the spot.
On information, police recovered the body.
Fatema might have committed suicide following a family feud, police suspected.

6 shops burnt in Sylhet market fire

Six shops were gutted in a fire that broke out at a market in Uposhahar area of Sylhet city early yesterday.
Fire service sources said the fire originated from an electric short circuit at a shop at Aljan Market around 12.30am and it soon engulfed five adjoining shops.
On information, four firefighting units rushed in and doused the flame after one and a half hours of frantic efforts.
However, the extent of losses caused by the fire could not be estimated.

5 Jamaat-Shibir men held with firearms

Police in a raid arrested five leaders and activists of Jamaat-Shibir and recovered one foreign made pistol, six cocktails, 20 bullets and some jihadi books from them at Nama Ganda Mohalla area under Savar pourasava Tuesday night.
A team of police conducted the raid at a house on the basis of secret information that the activists of Jamaat-Shibir might carry out subversive activities in the area.
During the raid, police arrested five leaders and activists of Jamaat - Shibir and also recovered the firearms, ammunition, cocktails and some jihadi books from them when they were holding a secret meeting at the house.

Man detained over wife's death

Police detained a person in connection with the death of his wife at Lichu Bagan area under Boalia Police Station in Rajshahi city yesterday.
The arrested person was identified as Anwarul Islam Ranju, 25, who married Momtaj Parveen
Mou, 20, around two years ago. On information, police recovered body of Mou early yesterday.
Shahadat Hossain, officer-in-charge of Boalia Model Police Station, said the body was sent to hospital morgue for post mortem. The detained person is being interrogated. Moly Akhtar, mother of the victim, lodged a case with the police station.
Since their marriage, Ranju along with his family members used to torture Mou frequently and that might be the reason behind her daughter's death, alleged Moly Akhtar.
