One year of Dec 30 polls

BNP plans countrywide protest rallies

Leaders await SC verdict on Khaleda bail
Special Correspondent, Dhaka

The BNP is planning to stage protest rallies across the country to mark one year anniversary of December 30 parliamentary elections, which it terms a farcical election. The party is considering various options and may hold protest rallies in the capital and across the country to observe the first anniversary of December 30 national ‘farcical polls’, said a senior BNP leader preferring anonymity.

The leader however said that the party leaders are now busy with the next course of political action over the issue of obtaining release of party Chairperson Kahleda Zia. The nature of the party’s next course of action will depend on the Supreme Court verdict over Khaleda’s bail petition as the Appellate Division deferred the hearing on the petition to December 12, he said.

The leader said the party policymakers would finalize the programme to mark the one year anniversary of 11th parliamentary polls after the SC verdict over Khaleda’s bail petition.

Another leader said, unless the Jatiya Oikyafront, where the BNP is a major partner, takes any programme to mark the one year anniversary of the last elections, the BNP would observe the day through protest programmes.

BNP Standing Committee Member Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain said they are yet to determine any programme to mark the one year anniversary of the last general elections.

“You (journalists) will be informed if we take any programme…Indeed, no programme is yet been finalised in this regard,” he said.

The elderly leader however said they would decide about possible programme at party policymaking body in time. Another standing committee member Begum Selima Rahman also said they would take necessary programme following the SC verdict over party chairperson’s release.

BNP Vice Chairman Shamsuzzaman Dudu said the party is yet to determine any programme to mark the one year anniversary of December 30 elections. The election was farcical one…the countrymen had observed as to how the election was manipulated. The party will certainly take political course of action to mark the one year anniversary of the polls, he said.

He further said the release of party chairperson is now a major issue for the party rank and file and party would take next course of action if the bail for the former premier is denied.

The BNP and its allies in the 20-party alliance and Jatiya Oikyafront took part in the December 30 parliamentary elections and got only six seats from among the 300 constituencies. Ganoforum, a partner of the Jatiya Oikyafront bagged only two seats. Lawmakers of both the BNP and Ganoforum, that rejected the elections terming it farcical one, later joined parliament in line with the decision of the party high commend.
