Bangladesh add 7 silver, two bronze on sixth day

Another disappointing day in SA Games

It was another day for Bangladesh without gold in the XIII South Asian Games when they could manage seven silver medals and two bronze yesterday in Kathmandu.  Four silver medals came from golf with the both singles and team events of men and women, two silver won by weightlifters (one men and one women), one silver and as many bronze won by shooters when one bronze came from women’s kabaddi.

Adrina Ferdous Ankhi won the silver in the women’s 10 meters air pistol event with scoring 234 points when Parmanantham Shri of Sri Lanka won the gold medal with scoring 238.4 and bronze won by Ibtisam Anna of Pakistan scoring 214.9.  Earlier, in the women’s 10 meters air pistol team event Bangladesh won bronze. The team comprising with Antu Anjila Amjad, Adrina Ferdous and  Nilufa Yasmin team scored 1655 points. In this event, Sri Lankan women’s team won gold scoring 1733 and Pakistani women won silver with scoring 1678.

Rokeya Sultana Sathi won silver in the women’s 71kg weight category lifting a total of 155kg with 70kg in the snatch and 85kg in the jerk. In this event Manpreet Kaur of India won gold as she lifted 192kg and Raj Laxmi Thapa of Nepal won bronze with lifting 150kg.  In the men’s 89 kg weight lifting categories Shakhawat Hossain won silver when he lifted a total of 268 kg with 123 kg in snatch and 145 kg in jerk. Bikash Thapa of Nepal won gold in this event. In the men’s golf individual event Mohammed Farhad won silver medal with scoring 282 following Nepalese gold medalist golfer scoring 274 points as bronze medalist of Nepal scoring 284 points.

The gold medal of men’s golf team event was also bagged by Nepal golfers after scoring 838 points when Bangladesh men’s team scored 856 points to win silver medal and Sri Lanka won bronze with scoring 878 points.  In the women’s individual golf event Zakia Sultana of Bangladesh won silver scoring 317 while Sri Lanka won gold and bronze medals.  In the golf women’s team event Bangladesh’s Nasima Akhter, Sonia Akhter and Zakia Sultana won silver with scoring 639 points and Sri Lanka won gold and bronze.

Besides winning seven silvers and two bronze medals yesterday, the Bangladesh the women’s handball team made room in the semifinal, held in Pokhara they outplayed their Sri Lankan counterparts by 34-13 with leading the first half by 16-6 goals. They will take on the game’s top favourites India today when Bangladesh men’s handball team also moved into the semifinal and  they will meet Pakistan today.

Bangladesh athletes again displayed dismal show yesterday in track and field when both the women and men’s runners finished fourth in the 4x400 meters relay. Abdur Rouf, Shariful Islam, Mohammed Ismail and Hassan Meah finished on fourth after clocking 42.34 seconds in the men’s event while Sri Lanka won gold with a timing of 39.14 seconds followed by India won the silver taking 39.97 seconds to finish. In the women’s events 4x400 relay, Sharifa Khatun, Shaohagi Begum, Tamanna Akhter, Shirin Akhter clocked 47.20 to be fourth while Sri Lankan women won gold in this event also after finishing on 44.89 seconds and India won silver with taking 45.36 seconds.
