A woman, whose body was set afire allegedly by husband by pouring kerosene in Gazipur on Saturday, died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on Wednesday after fighting for life for three days.
The deceased was identified as Tapoti Rani Das,20, wife of Sanjoy Kumar Das at Dighirpar area of Kaliakair upazila in Gazipur district.
Sonjila Rani Dash, mother of the deceased, said Tapoti Rani Das had been married with Sanjoy Kumar Das, 26, son of Joy Kumar Das of Alongjuri village under Itna upazila in Kishoreganj district five years ago after a long relationship of love. She had been living with her husband Sonjoy and their five years old son Rodro in a rented house owned by one Hazi Fazlul Haque at Dighirpar in the upazila.
Tapoti was an employee of the quality section at Ecotex Garments Factory in Chandra Palli Bidyut area, but her husband Sanjoy had no job. He often tortured his wife over family feud. On Saturday, Sanjoy set fire to Tapoti’s body by pouring kerosene around 10 pm over a family feud. Hearing her screams, neighbours rushed in, doused the flame and took Tapoti to Kaliakoir Upazila Health Complex.
She was later shifted to the burn and plastic surgery unit of DMCH as her condition deteriorated. But after three days of fighting She died there on Wednesday noon after battling for life for three days. Dr Partha Sangker Paul, residential medical officer of the DMCH burn unit, said Tapoti had been taken there with about 90 percent of her body burnt.
Tapoti’s mother filed a case with Kaliakair police station accusing her husband and seven others on Sunday afternoon, said Azim Hossain Khan, sub-inspector of the police station, also investigation officer of the case.
Police arrested the house owner but he was later freed. On the other hand, Tapoti’s husband Sanjoy Kumar Dash went into hiding after the incident.
The SI said, “We’re trying to arrest the accused.”
