Moving within the city experienced a revolutionary change in 2016 when Pathao, an app based ride sharing company, appeared in the market. Since then, many companies have emerged to offer app based transport service through motorcycles and cars. Already, two ride-sharing companies—Shohoz, Pathao-- received licences (enlistment certificate) from Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA).
As a pioneer in the field, Pathao currently has over 200,000 registered riders with six million users. The other companies are also seeing an expansion in business since commuting in the cities, especially in the capital, had always been a headache with many roads narrowed down for the metro rail work.
The app based ride sharing operation has two major benefits: firstly, income source for the young, independent and educated person who can make an earning as per his/her convenient time and secondly, benefit of linking so many people to the app based system, making the nation truly digital.
The app based system is like a blessing for many young people who are studying but would like to earn in their free time. The app based service is also diversifying because from providing everyday transport, it’s also expanding to food delivery in the city.
In addition to cars and bikes, cycles are also added. Without doubt, the future of this operation looks bright because we may be seeing app based ambulance and other services for plumbing, electrical and veterinary support. While this new addition is laudable, regulation and monitoring are essential to ensure that in the guise of such services fraudsters do not hoodwink the people. All app based ride sharing services must be registered with the BRTA and random bikers without proper apps should not be permitted to operate.
The riders need to be aware of road rules and make safe journey the priority instead of rash driving. In the future, schools in the city may also be brought under such a system through which children will be given home to school and back services to the relief of parents.
Pathao has introduced special helmets for their riders, which makes them easily identifiable. Having distinct marks need to be made a rule so all such app based riders and drivers are easily spotted by their helmet colour or car stickers. This will ensure safety plus satisfaction of the users.
