Local leaders have started lobbying for party tickets to contest for election to municipalities in Tangail district.
There are 11 municipalities in Tangail district. Of them elections will be held in nine municipalities following the end of current tenure. The municipalities are Tangail, Madhupur, Gopalpur, Bhuapur, Dhanbari, Ghatail, Sakhipur, Mirzapur and Kalihati municipalities. Election of Basail and Elenga municipalities will be held later.
A large number of local Awami League leaders are trying to get nomination for the mayoral post.
Numbers of AL and BNP candidates are many. They are lobbying with the party high-ups to get the ticket. On the other hand, the aspiring candidates are drawing the attention and blessings of the voters by erecting bill boards and coloured posters with photos at various intersection and public places of the town. Many candidates are making mass contacts to attract the party leaders.
In Tangail, sitting mayor Shahidur Rahman Khan Mukti, accused in AL leader Farook Ahmed murder case, has been absconding.
Ex-mayor Jamilur Rahman Miron, who has just joined AL, and Sirajul Hoque Alamgir are AL aspirants. While BNP leaders Lafor Ahmed and Saidul Islam Sadu are trying to get party nomination.
In Madhupur three candidates are lobbying for AL ticket. They are president of Madhupur Upazila AL Khondoker Safi Uddin, vice-president of Madhupur Upazila AL and ex-Upazila Chairman Khondoker Abdul Gafur Montoo and secretary of Madhupur Poura AL Masud Parvez. Sitting mayor Sarker Shahidul Islam Shaheed is the only candidate of BNP.
In Sakhipur, sitting mayor freedom fighter Abu Hanif Azad, noted sports organiser Zulfiker Haider Kamal Lebu, ex-treasurer of Upazila AL Prof. Abdul Alim, president of poura AL Prof. Ahmad Ali, secretary Quazi Safiul Islam Badal, president of Upazila Juba League Khalilur Rahman, secretary Zahangir Talukder and member of AL Sheer Ali are the aspiring candidates from AL.
Secretary of Sakhipur Upazila BNP Nasir Uddin, ex-mayor Sanower Hossain, Juba Dal leader Abul Baser are aspiring from BNP. Prof Meer Zulfiker Shameem will contest from Krisak Sramik Janata League, Abdur Rahim of JP (Anowar) and Aynal Hoque JP (Ershad) are trying to get party nomination.
In Ghatail, Hasan Ali, Shahidul Islam of AL and Monjurul Hoque of BNP are the aspiring candidates. In Kalihati sitting mayor Ansar Ali BCom from AL, Ali Akbor Jobbar of BNP are the strong candidates. In Bhuapur Masudur Rahman Masud and Amirul Islam Talukder, Toriqul Islam of AL, and ex-mayor Abdul Khaleque Mondol and Zahangir Hossain from BNP are trying to get party ticket.
In Gopalpur, sitting mayor Zahangir Alam Rubel, Khairul Kabir Uzzol of BNP, Rokibul Hoque Sana, Belayet Hossain, Saiful Islam, Enamul Hoque, Giash Uddin and Abdul Jobbar are AL aspirants.
In Mirzapur, current mayor Shahidul Islam, ex-mayor Mosarraf Hossain, Shahadat Hossain, Ferhad Hossain of AL and president of poura BNP Hazrat Ali are the aspiring candidates.
In Dhanbari, sitting mayor Khondoker Manjurul Islam Tapan, Harunur Rashid Hira, Alhaj Bodiul Alam Monju of AL, Habibullah Fokir, Khyrul Islam Munshi, Sobhan Ali of BNP and Ferdous Alam of JP are trying to get party ticket.
Ex-minister Dr. Abdur Razzaque, MP from Tangail-1 (Madhupur-Dhanbari), told the correspondent that a large number of candidates are seeking nomination for mayoral post.
Its a sign of enthusiasm generated among the party leaders and activists. The idea of partisan polls is highly appreciated by the voters, he added.
