Bangladesh Under-23 national football team kept their hope alive to play in the final of the XIII SA Games when they managed solitary goal win against Sri Lanka yesterday. Held at the Dasharath Rangashala Stadium, Mauhbubur Rahman Shufil scored the all important goal early in the game.
Bangladesh, who began their campaign with a disaster 1-0 defeat at the hands of Bhutan and could earn only one point after a one all draw against Maldives in the second match, made their chance difficult to move into the final. After winning the match yesterday they just have a slim hope to play in the final but will have to cross a stiff hurdle of hosts Nepal in their last group match on December 8.
After three matches Bangladesh amassed four points when Bhutan earned six points from two wins and suffered 4-0 to Nepal. However, Bangladesh went ahead early in the 12th minute with Mahbubur Rahman Shufil made a cool finish off a Saad Uddin’s cross from right side (1-0).
Rest of the time both sides tried to take the match domination but Bangladesh had better possessions and also created some close chance in the second half but could not utilize the opportunities. On the other hands, Sri Lanka also opened some good chance in the first half but failed to mark the target. However, Jamie Day, fielded the team with four changes when he dropped Nabib Newaz Jibon replacing Mahbuur Rahan Shufi, who scored the winning goal of the match yesterday.
