Bangladesh finished another dismal day at XIII South Asian Games yesterday in Kathmandu without winning any gold medal. They managed to clinch four silver medals and two bronze on the day. Bangladesh won one gold on Monday and another three on Tuesday.
However, Bangladesh’s prospect of winning a medal in field and track event was shattered when a couple of male sprinters Zahir Raihan and Abu Taleb fell sick when they were preparing to start the 400m run final. Both of them complained about breathing problem and the physician stopped them from running the event.
Zahir Raihan, who was very much prospect to win medal in the 400 meters sprint finished third in the heat to move into the final and Abu Taleb also qualified for the final after finishing eighth in the heat. But both the athletes became ill after their heat and when they were suffering from respiratory distress and had to be hospitalised.
After rushing into the hospital Dr Pabon Rawal of the emergency department of the Brooks Memorial Hospital said of Jahir that his pulse rate was higher than normal and did not allow him to participate in the final. “For rapid pulse rate than the normal velocity, so in this condition we can’t permit him to take part in the final,” said Dr Pabon Rawal.
Now, both the athletes are now in the hospital under treatment, according to information from Kathmandu. Silver medals came from shooting, wushu and weightlifting while bronze medals came from wushu and shooting.
